“Emotions”, After hearing this. What crosses your mind?
Whether it is some thought, line or picture. Just take a moment to think about it, and how it relates to you.
Today, in this fast-growing competitive world, it seems next to impossible to find some time for oneself. In fact, we hardly ever take a moment out to think about our own emotional health.
So, let's take a moment today!
Ask yourself now, what is health? Is it your body giving certification of being healthy?
Your inner feelings or it is actually about your mind giving you signs?
If we talk about people who seem healthy, like a gym trainer or yoga instructor. They may seem to have a fascinating toned body and impressive physical health. The physique may not shed light into a person’s emotional health. The truth is most of us don't have a clue about another person’s emotional health.
In our opinion, Emotional Health refers to the ability experienced by an individual which accepts and manages feelings, thoughts, changing behaviors, ensures a strong sense of mental well-being and decisions taken true to one’s nature and ‘heart’.
The most integral part of emotional health is to accept your feelings. Whatever you are feeling, you need to feel it completely. You need to accept it.
The magic mantra you can murmur in your mind is “It is okay if I am feeling sad/ angry/ (replace it with whatever your emotions are) as I am (think of the reason). I know it is my reality, I just need to remember, this phase will pass too.
I am strong and have come a long way in my journey”
The good news is even if you are not feeling emotionally healthy, this mantra will work. This is the 1st step is to understand your own emotional state.
Some possible signs that a person may be going through an emotional upheaval are;
Their Anxiety isn't letting them concentrate on tasks.
They may seem stressed and irritable.
Headaches are turning into migraines.
There is an increase in tension which may slip into depression.
Insomnia may not let them sleep.
They may lack confidence in expressing their opinion
They are expressing anger more than usual.
There may be over sleeping/under sleeping or they may be harsh on their physique
There might be sudden dips and sudden highs in emotions
Both mental and emotional health are closely related yet are different. According to what we have understood and with reference to Red Oak Recovery, We concluded Mental health deals with behaviours that are related to the mind/brain. These may be seen as learning disabilities such as Dyslexia or congenital abnormalities in the brain’s neuro transmission. On the other hand, Emotional health is attached with our personality or ‘heart’, the feeling and decisions that may be caused due to external circumstances, such as a traumatic life event. Emotional health may deteriorate when one is unable to understand, harness their emotional state.
Therefore, it is important to be emotionally healthy by understanding what we are feeling and why we may be feeling this. It is important that we are mindful about our emotional state and do not shun it away and shove it under the carpet.
To develop a balanced emotional well-being, we need to build emotional skills. Here are some tips:
Express yourself - Writing a journal / google notes, drawing, painting, singing, playing an instrument are some of the best ways to pour our emotions out and help us relax and embrace our emotions.
Meditation – Relaxes our body, mind and soul. It is one of the best ways to overcome any stress emotionally, mentally and physically.
Realistic Thinking - Enables one to think in the right direction, even if the situation may seem negative. It is import to have faith, accept it and then put your energy towards finding the best solution for you. Always remember, every problem has a solution.
Emotion Regulation – Introspect and reflect on the current and past emotions and thoughts. Knowing about one’s emotions helps one to cope with life’s challenges and leads to peace in mind.
Talk to someone – This may be a friend, family member, an animal or a thing. Just putting things in words gives perspective. Sometimes seeking professional advice may help as well, you may speak to a psychologist, coach or mental health professional.
Let us start our emotional journey now, through the below activity:
Take out 10 minutes from your schedule
Play soothing music
Sit comfortably with your phone in your hand
Open your photo gallery.
Look for a photo that has given you joy (anything, a certificate, pictures or portfolio, videos)
Close your eyes
Think of the time and go back to the day and how you felt (happy, proud etc).
Now take a pencil and paper and draw this scene
Write down the feeling that went through your mind
Note down who all were present with you
Relive this moment!
We hope this brought a smile to your face and filled you up with an ocean of emotions.
We hope this activity brought joy to you. Like you did today, give yourself time and be kind towards yourself even in difficult situations.
We believe emotional health is an integral part of overall health. People who are emotionally healthy understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and actions. They are able to cope with life’s challenges mindfully. They show resilience as they embrace their emotions by keeping their problems in perspective and bounce back from setbacks. This makes them feel good about themselves and have balanced relationships as they understand their emotional state and are able to express this to others.
Emotional health plays a very crucial role in our life. It simply means that you are aware of what you are feeling. Our feelings, thoughts, actions may change our behaviour and impact our emotional health. Thus, it is important to see what role our emotions are playing in our actions, by taking out 5 minutes each day to reflect on yourself.
Afterall, it is important to take care of ‘You’ holistically. In order to enter your gateway of health today!
